Standard Operating Procedure (SOP): A Necessary Evil?

Dr. Richard Pang, Scientific Officer (Medical), Division of Clinical Biochemistry, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are the written instructions that govern all aspects of daily activities at the laboratory. The primary purpose of the SOPs is to guide and standardize working procedures in order to ensure data reliability and integrity for decision-making and regulatory purposes. The SOPs should be used as practical tools in daily practice. Good SOPs, however, are necessary but not sufficient for the production of quality data. The SOPs are only successful if the users read, understand and follow them. They have the same limitations as any tools, functioning best in skilled hands, and uncritical use can be a danger to the production of quality data. Managers should pay attentions to the staff resistance and the danger signs such as unauthorized alterations and deviations.
