Abstract

The susceptibility of 39 Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from blood cultures in the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong from August 2002 to August 2003 to 16 antimicrobial agents was studied by an agan dilution method. Resistance to most of the beta-lactams alone showed low activity (13-50%). However, when combined with beta-lactamase inhibitors including piperacillin-tazobactam and cefoperazone-sulbactam, activities were greatly improved. The resistance rate to fluoroquinolones and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole werer from 5% to 18%. All isolates were sensitive to amikacin, except one was resistant to carbapenem.
