Membership is available, irrespective of sex and nationality but according to qualifications and experiences, to persons engaged in the practice of medical laboratory sciences and in good conduct and willing to observe the statute of the Institute.

Corporate Membership

Ordinary member

Person who at present possesses at least one of the following qualifications:

  1. Ordinary Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology issued by School of Professional and Continuing Education (formerly Department of Extra-Mural Studies), University of Hong Kong.

  2. Ordinary Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science issued by Hong Kong Polytechnic University (formerly Hong Kong Polytechnic).

  3. Proficiency Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology issued by Hong Kong Medical & Health Department before 1982.

  4. Higher Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology issued by School of Professional and Continuing Education (formerly Department of Extra-Mural Studies), University of Hong Kong.

  5. Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science issued by Hong Kong Polytechnic University (formerly Hong Kong Polytechnic).

  6. Associateship of Institute of Biomedical Science (formerly Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences), United Kingdom.

  7. Fellowship of Institute of Biomedical Science (formerly Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences), United Kingdom.

  8. Certificate issued by Hong Kong Medical Laboratory Technologists Board.

Associate

  1. Higher Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology issued by School of Professional and Continuing Education (formerly Department of Extra Mural Studies), University of Hong Kong.

  2. Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science issued by Hong Kong Polytechnic University (formerly Hong Kong Polytechnic).

  3. Associateship of Institute of Biomedical Science (formerly Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences), United Kingdom.

  4. Fellowship of Institute of Biomedical Science (formerly Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences), United Kingdom.

Fellow

Person who has been an Associate of the Institute for not less than 2 years, at present registered as Part I Medical Laboratory Technologist and has acquired at least one of the following:

  1. Having presented thesis, under the recommendation of two current Fellows and approved by the Executive Council.

  2. Having made distinctive contribution to the Profession, under the recommendation of two current Fellows and approved by the Executive Council.

  1. Membership dues are paid annually, and cover the subscription year, from April 1 to March 31.
  2. Application approved within 1st January - 31st March of each year, the annual subscription for that immediate subscription year will be exempted.

Benefits and Obligations

  1. The corporate members: Ordinary member, Associate and Fellow have the rights of election, proposal and vote.
  2. Other members are entitled the right of proposal only.
  3. All members are entitled the welfare stipulated in the objectives.
  4. Current Fellows and Associates are entitled to use FHKIMLS and AHKIMLS as their designations respectively.
  5. Person who stops serving in the field of medical laboratory sciences can reserve his/her membership. He/she should keep on paying the annual subscription, but he/she should not take the position of office-bearer in Executive Council (EC) and Advisory Board (AB).
  6. Members should obligate the decisions approved in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) or the Extra-Ordinary General Meeting (EGM).
  7. All members, except those categories fall into free membership as stated above, should pay annual subscription according to the regulation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Disciplines and Penalties

  1. If member has offended against the following conditions, subject to the approval of EC, he/she will receive warning or expulsion from the Institute.
    1. Violate the Memorandum and Article of the Institute or do not obey the decision of AGM or EGM.
    2. Damage the honorary of Institute.
    3. Use the name of Institute without authorization.
    4. Delay payment of annual subscription over 6 months (suspended from the entitlement of benefits stated in the Memorandum and Article).
    5. Violate the Supplementary Medical Professions (SMP) Ordinance.
    6. Offend against criminal laws and has been declared guilty.

  2. If member is warned or dismissed from the membership, he/she can appeal in the AGM or EGM which then makes the final decision.
  3. If the expulsion is due to delay payment of annual subscription, he/she can apply for reactivation of their membership by paying the outstanding amount.
