CHARACTERISTIC of poikilocytosis

Outline

Increase proportion of cells of abnormal shape.

Poikilocytosis is a common, non-specific abnormality in haematological disorders.

High altitude produces some degree of poikilocytosis in haematologically normal subjects.

Cause: it may be produced by bone marrow or from damage to normal cells after release into the blood stream.

Diagnostic possibilities: myelofibrosis, congenital and acquired dyserythropoietic anaemias and hereditary pyropoikilocytosis.
